NYFW Duo Style

On the streets of NYFW I saw many pairs coordinating in ways that weren’t obvious. Regardless if the matching was intentional or by accident, the pairs looked on point. Here are five street style looks that stood out to me and why they work as a matching duo.

COLOR COORDINATION

  • Warm hues of red

  • White accents

  • loose /oversize fit

  • Tailoring

This couple’s approach to matching outfits is more inconspicuous. They opted for a warm palette of rusty red hues to lead their image, with white accents bringing out the color palette. Both chose a tailored piece and paired it with an oversized garment to offer a joyous spin on timeless classics.

MATCHY MATCHY

  • Same patterns, same brand

  • Saturated tones

  • Youthful gadgets

The Young Emperors’ underlines their affiliation with fashion using statement pieces such as bold red checkered pattern and a distinctive print repeated on their tops. They leave no doubt as to what their aim is - Emperors are Instagram’s most famous matching couple and, yet again, they prove their rights to the crown.

TAILORED TO A T

  • Color palette - cold tones

  • Same finishings (buttons, hems)

  • Wide and thin cat eye glasses

  • Power elegance

The same finishings on their attire suggest both pieces come from the same designer, yet each lady offers her own twist of the style. Both classical, with an edge - courtesy of narrow, pointy sunglasses. Their choice of a garment seems to be informed by their respective maturity.

ECLECTIC INDIVIDUALITY

  • Bold fabrics - many textures and patterns

  • Overall black color palette with pops of color - Mickey Boardman’s pink sneakers, the touch of red in Lynn Yaeger’s tulle patterned skirt and oversized cardigan, and of course, Yaeger’s iconic orange bob and wine purple cupid bow lips.

  • Oversized fit

  • Bold makeup and accessories

This bold pair reminds us once again that fashion in the context of self expression doesn’t discriminate. Not even our ageist society can take away their unique spark and strong presence among other street fashionistas. It would be a challenge to steal the show from that multi textured duo. Yaeger is wearing a Simone Rocha dress and Boardman is wearing shorts, patterned with paparazzi photos of himself, and a sequence polo from his Mr.Mickey collection.

MONOCHROME

  • Leading one color

  • Small black features as accessories

  • Headwear and eyewear

Despite @la.marco and Desmond Handon each having something else to say through their outfits, together they create a cohesive and well matched set. Different fabrics pop through, yet the whole is united through a monochrome approach to the color palette. The result is underlined by featuring black accessories.
