Swimsuit Style

This wasn’t a summer where my swimsuits were going to see the light of day. Yeah, Covid sucks, but I decided to experiment and find ways to wear them outside of the swimming pool or to get more use out of them! And I love them enough that I would want to wear them more than for swimming in. These aren’t the “I ran out of clean underwear” swimsuit looks. I’m looking at you, Gillian Jacobs! I started watching “Love” on Netflix just to see how Gillian’s character styled her one piece, but then I ended up watching 4 episodes in a row! I styled all these looks with Flagpole NYC suits because I love their silhouettes, the geometric cutouts, colors, and my favorite, the non-shimmery fabric that makes it possible to wear Flagpole swimsuits outside of a swimming context without seeming tacky. Still looking at you, Gillian Jacobs! Because the Flagpole co-founders, Megan and Jaime, based the design of their suits off the leotard, it’s easy to style these suits in a look for work (do you dare?!?), for your work out, or as loungewear (yes, I’ve done it because they’re that comfy!). Here are my looks:

LOOK ONE

Flagpole’s swimsuits have plenty of stretch but are so supportive. Why not wear them while doing some yoga? I styled this one piece with a pair of leggings, and I’m impressed by how this simple change upped my yoga work out look! In a world outside of Covid, I’d definitely head to the café post yoga workout by throwing a blazer on it. I’m claiming this as the new, post-work out hoodie look! This has been my quarantine/zoom meeting go-to look (as previously seen here) because I made the effort to get out of my pajamas and into other clothes. Yes, they’re workout clothes, but it’s 2020, and ain’t nobody got time (or the will) for another outfit change in a single day!

LOOK TWO

Going strong with another athletic look. I’m wearing the Lynn and paired it with a pair of Girlfriend track pants and sneakers. The Lynn is a favorite swimsuit of mine because the cut outs create the illusion of a high waisted bottom. And I love a high waisted swimsuit bottom! When worn with athletic pants, the top part of the suit is support enough it works as well as a sports bra.

LOOK THREE

I have long eyed the Babe swimsuit because of it’s classic sweetheart top and the triangular color blocking! I styled it with a blazer (surprise, surprise) and high waisted skinny jeans. Because this suit has a colored band at the waist, it’s best to style it with a high waisted bottom as to not to create an awkward visual break at your torso. This is a look at could do well as a day time look. With a single button blazer, the color blocking pattern is concealed, creating a simple look. Until you open your blazer that is!

LOOK FOUR

The leotard! It’s what started it all at Flagpole! This look feels chill and sexy at the same time. I love the coloring blocking and the low back. I wore this suit when I was eight months pregnant. It stretched beautifully and, as you can see it kept its shape. I paired this swimsuit with high waisted mom jeans to contrast the form fitting shape of the suit. The top of the jeans hit just below the blue of the swimsuit, complimenting this color blocking pattern. Now just throw on a pair of Vans and hoops. I got these Maeberry hoops in orchid and the colors paired so well! I imagine a really cool California girl long boarding in this look. And I gotta imagine because alas, I live in the midwest and I don’t longboard.

Hope you enjoyed these styling tips! Let me know your thoughts on wearing swimsuits other than for swimming in. Are you team “it’s tacky” or team “love multi-functional clothes!” When Jaime told me the story of how Flagpole came to be, one question came to mind, “why couldn’t I be in a leotard and be in swim?” I say Flagpole succeeded in making the swimsuit a multi-functional piece of clothing! Now that’s a wonderful reason to have more than one swimsuit…which speaking of, you can shop Flagpole’s 75% off sample sale, going on now through Monday.
